Abel Tasman Coast Track

New Zealand’s stunning scenery and unique wildlife make it a great destination for both local and overseas visitors who are interested in hiking and tramping. The many walking trails dotted throughout the North and South Islands of New Zealand provide people with the opportunity to get close to nature and immerse themselves in NZ’s rich and unspoiled landscape.

The Department of Conservation maintain a network of walking tracks to ensure that they remain safe and accessible for people to use throughout the year. The most popular and well known tracks in New Zealand are collectively known as ‘The Great Walks’. There are 9 Great Walks with 3 located in the North Island and 6 located in the South Island.

The Great Walk tracks take more than 1 day to complete (although there are smaller walks contained with the main walks) and there are huts and campsites available along the tracks for visitors to stay the night. The huts are operated by the Department of Conservation and contain bathroom and cooking facilities and you can bring your own tent to stay at one of the campsites. The overnight huts cater for individuals as well as families and groups but you may need to book them during the peak summer season.

Due to their popularity many of the Great Walks have booking systems to manage visitor pressure but there is no charge or permit required to walk the tracks. Guided walks also run along the tracks and these are operated by private tour companies.

In this series of articles we will take a closer look at each of the Great Walks and help you get prepared to take on the challenge!

The first classifed Great Walk in the South Island is the Abel Tasman Coast Track located in the Abel Tasman National Park.

Abel Tasman Coast Track

The key points:

60 km track which takes 3-5 days from Marahau to Wainui Bay. You can walk the track in either direction. It is well marked and signposted but some parts of the track can be steep or muddy depending on the weather.

No dogs are allowed on the track

Many secluded and sheltered coves and lookout points are accessible from the Coast Track as well as short side trips that take 20 minutes to 1.5 hour maximum.  The Abel Tasman Coast Track is one of the most famous walks in New Zealand because of it’s beautiful coastal scenery and kayaking opportunities.

Golden beaches abound with camping huts available right on the beach. Lush coastal forests and natural rock pools surround the track providing safe swimming spots and the chance to see seals and penguins in their natural environment. The Abel Tasman Coastal Track is a gentle walk that offers a scenic delight on every corner, so you are encouraged to take your time and explore the hidden beaches and coves along the way.

Before you head out on the track it is essential to be prepared and ensure that you have all the right equipment with you. Make someone where you are going and the date you expect to be back. You will also need adequate food, water and clothing supplies for your trip. No food or drink is available in the park so you will need to bring your own supplies.

Guided kayaking tours are recommended for those who aren't experienced on the water, and it is important that you prepare for the best and worst weather that could occur. In the summertime the heat and sun when you are out on the water can be dangerous so it is important to wear sunscreen and have a bucket hat to protect you from the elements.

It is also advisable to be prepared for at least one wet day out on the coastal track. Wet weather gear made in NZ is ideal for the great New Zealand outdoors and Westland Workgear sell a variety of waterproof and safety clothes in Auckland and Wellington such as pants and jackets as well as other protective gear such as bucket hats. They offer nationwide delivery from their online store so wherever you going in the great outdoors you are prepared with their practical and affordable range of New Zealand made wet weather gear and work clothing.
